18Jul2015: After some discussion with my significant other, I throw out a number and a title. Both are match (a little to my surprise). I throw out a Facebook message to my accountant (who is also a family member) and get some idea of the types of things that I can expect from a tax perspective. I also send out a message to my retirement advisor (also family). I accept the position. I also make travel arrangements for the upcoming 2 weeks. The job means being away from home from Tuesday to Thursday. That's a tough one.

20Jul2015: I quit my job with one day of notice. That was pretty easy. I was really not happy or satisfied with the position, and I'd only been there for 8 months. I elected not to tell them that I wasn't happy, figuring that would only prolong the process. Instead I chose to focus on the positive: an exciting new opportunity which I absolutely could not pass up.
21Jul2015: I fly from NJ to Boston to report for my first day at work. I'm hooked.
23Jul2015: My boss (President of the company) hands me the W-9 form. It's a pretty straight-forward document. The big choice is federal tax classification, which are:
- Individual / sole proprietor
- C Corporation
- S Corporation
- Partnership
- Trust / Estate
- Limited Liability Company
I don't have anything setup, so I select Individual / sole proprietor and hope for the best. Scan the document and email it to the boss.
- ACTION: Contact boss: Do I need a contract (rate, payment terms, etc)?
I need to keep track of time and expenses so that I bill appropriately...
Does anyone in my network have a spreadsheet I can use? Turns out that my friend Suzanne does have something. I also have existing spreadsheets. I can probably augment my existing spreadsheets.
- ACTION: Update Spreadsheet to allow time tracking / expense reporting
I'm sure that there is more to learn...
