The Beginning

17Jul2015:  An ex-colleague and friend tapped me to join his team.  He can offer me a great rate, but I need to be a 1099 contractor.  I've never done that before, but the opportunity (and the money frankly) are too good to pass up.
18Jul2015:  After some discussion with my significant other, I throw out a number and a title.  Both are match (a little to my surprise).  I throw out a Facebook message to my accountant (who is also a family member) and get some idea of the types of things that I can expect from a tax perspective.  I also send out a message to my retirement advisor (also family).  I accept the position.  I also make travel arrangements for the upcoming 2 weeks.  The job means being away from home from Tuesday to Thursday.  That's a tough one.

  • ACTION:  Schedule a detailed discussion with Accountant
  • ACTION:  Schedule a detailed discussion with Financial Advisor

20Jul2015:  I quit my job with one day of notice.  That was pretty easy.  I was really not happy or satisfied with the position, and I'd only been there for 8 months.  I elected not to tell them that I wasn't happy, figuring that would only prolong the process.  Instead I chose to focus on the positive:  an exciting new opportunity which I absolutely could not pass up.
21Jul2015:  I fly from NJ to Boston to report for my first day at work.  I'm hooked.
23Jul2015:  My boss (President of the company) hands me the W-9 form.  It's a pretty straight-forward document.  The big choice is federal tax classification, which are:

  • Individual / sole proprietor
  • C Corporation
  • S Corporation
  • Partnership
  • Trust / Estate
  • Limited Liability Company
I don't have anything setup, so I select Individual / sole proprietor and hope for the best.  Scan the document and email it to the boss.
  • ACTION:  Contact boss:  Do I need a contract (rate, payment terms, etc)?
I need to keep track of time and expenses so that I bill appropriately...
Does anyone in my network have a spreadsheet I can use?  Turns out that my friend Suzanne does have something.  I also have existing spreadsheets.  I can probably augment my existing spreadsheets.
  • ACTION:  Update Spreadsheet to allow time tracking / expense reporting
I'm sure that there is more to learn...
